Conversion rate optimization tools in 2026: what each kind does

4 min read · updated

Conversion rate optimization tools fall into five kinds: analytics that count what happened, behaviour tools that show how people used a page, testing tools that compare versions, personalisation tools that change the page per visitor, and engagement tools such as chat that talk to people while they decide. Most stores under 100,000 sessions a month need free analytics, one behaviour tool and one tool that changes the page and proves the change against a control group. Buying all five rarely pays.

Which kinds of CRO tools are there?

Vendors blur the lines, so it helps to sort tools by the job they do rather than by what they call themselves. Some tools only tell you what happened. Others change your site. Only a few do both, and fewer still prove that the change caused the result.

AnalyticsCounts visits, sources and conversions. Tells you where people drop off, not why.
Behaviour analyticsHeatmaps, session recordings and surveys. Shows how people used a page.
TestingSplits traffic between versions you design and reports which converts better.
PersonalisationShows different versions to different visitors, by rules or by learning.
EngagementLive chat, AI chat agents and prompts that talk to a visitor while they decide.

What do analytics and behaviour tools cost?

Google Analytics 4 is free and is where most stores start; it answers how many people came, from where, and how many bought.

For behaviour, Microsoft Clarity is free and offers heatmaps and session recordings. Hotjar merged into the Contentsquare Group on 1 July 2025, and its pricing page now redirects to Contentsquare, which listed a free plan with 200,000 monthly sessions and a Growth plan at USD 39 a month when we read it on 24 October 2026.

These tools tell you what is wrong. None of them change the page, so somebody still has to decide what to change, build it and measure it. That is where most CRO programmes stall: a folder of heatmaps and no time to act on them.

Which A/B testing tools are left after Google Optimize?

Google Optimize shut down on 30 September 2023, which pushed many small teams to paid tools. The market has since consolidated further.

VWO and AB Tasty now present as one platform called Wingify; vwo.com/pricing redirects to wingify.com, which listed Growth, Pro and Enterprise plans with prices on demo only and no free plan on 24 October 2026. Optimizely describes every plan as individually packaged and publishes no prices. Convert publishes its prices: on the same date its Growth plan was USD 399 a month, or USD 299 a month billed annually, for 100,000 tested users, with a 15 day trial.

What about personalisation and AI CRO tools?

Personalisation tools change the page per visitor. Some are rules based, configured by audience. Others learn. Intellimize, one of the early learning tools, was acquired by Webflow in April 2024 and is now part of Webflow's own optimisation product, which matters if your site is not on Webflow.

Newer agentic tools go a step further: they read intent per visit, choose a change from an approved list, apply it and keep learning, inside guardrails you set. The question to ask any of them is the same one you would ask a testing tool: is there a held out control group, and can you see the lift with its uncertainty? A tool that reports only the conversion rate of the people it personalised is reporting selection, not impact.

Where do chat and AI agents fit in CRO?

Chat is a conversion tool when it is on the pages where people decide, answers the question that is stopping them, and shows the right product. It is a support cost when it sits on every page answering order status.

Published chat pricing on 24 October 2026: Tidio listed a free plan and a Starter plan at USD 24.17 a month, with its Lyro AI agent from USD 32.50 a month for 50 conversations. Intercom listed seats from USD 19 to USD 132 a month plus USD 0.99 per Fin AI outcome. Zoho SalesIQ showed visitors in India a free plan and paid plans from 350 rupees per operator per month billed annually.

Which CRO tools does a store need at each traffic level?

The right stack depends far more on traffic than on budget, because every tool that tests or learns needs enough visitors to say anything.

  • Under 10,000 sessions a month: free analytics, a free behaviour tool, and fixes you can make without testing, such as delivery dates, return terms and payment options shown beside the buy button. Measure with a simple before and after, and treat it as a hint, not proof.
  • 10,000 to 100,000 sessions a month: add one tool that changes the page and holds back a control group. A learning tool usually beats classic A/B testing here, because it shifts traffic to winners while it learns.
  • Over 100,000 sessions a month: a dedicated testing programme, a personalisation layer and someone whose job is CRO start to pay for themselves.

How should you compare CRO tools before buying?

Ask each vendor five questions and write down the answers. Is there a free plan or a published price? What is the pricing unit: seats, sessions, tested users or outcomes, and what does it cost at your traffic? Does it hold back a control group by default? What can it change on your site, and what can it never change? What does it record about visitors, and does it store IP addresses?

The last two decide your risk. A tool that can rewrite any part of a page, or that records sessions including what people type, needs more review than one that can only change elements you marked and records no sessions.

Where does IntellQ fit among CRO tools?

IntellQ covers three of the five kinds in one script tag: personalisation through agents that change marked page elements per visitor, engagement through live chat and an AI sales agent that shows catalog products as cards, and live visitor tracking with attention per page block. It holds back a control group on every change. It does not record sessions, draw heatmaps or run server side tests, so many teams keep a free behaviour tool beside it. It has a free plan with 1,000 agent credits and no end date, then USD 79 a month, with unlimited seats.

Questions

What is the best free CRO tool?

For counting, Google Analytics 4. For seeing behaviour, Microsoft Clarity is free, and Contentsquare listed a free plan with 200,000 sessions a month in October 2026. Neither changes your site; they show you where to look.

Do I need an A/B testing tool if I have personalisation?

Not if the personalisation tool holds back a control group and reports lift with its uncertainty. That is the same measurement an A/B test gives you. If it does not, you still need a way to prove the changes work.

What replaced Google Optimize?

Google Optimize shut down on 30 September 2023 with no direct free successor from Google. Teams moved to paid testing tools such as Convert, to platforms such as Wingify or Optimizely, or to personalisation tools with built in control groups.

How much should a small store spend on CRO tools?

Under 10,000 sessions a month, close to nothing: free analytics and a free behaviour tool are enough, and the money is better spent on fixing the obvious. Pay for a tool that changes the page once you have the traffic to measure it.
