What an AI shopping assistant should and should not do

3 min read · updated

An AI shopping assistant is a chat agent on a store that answers product questions and recommends items from the store's own catalogue, the way a knowledgeable salesperson would. Done well, it grounds every answer in your published pages and live product data, shows products as cards with real prices, and hands over to a person for orders, payments and complaints. Done badly, it invents policies, discounts and stock, which costs more trust than it earns.

How does an AI shopping assistant work?

It combines a language model with your store's data. The catalogue, product descriptions, FAQs and policy pages are indexed. When a shopper asks something, the assistant retrieves the relevant pieces and the model writes an answer from them, ideally citing or showing the products it drew on.

The model provides the language. Your data provides the facts. When an assistant answers from the model's general knowledge instead of your data, that is where invented answers come from.

What should it be allowed to do?

Answer questions that your published content already answers. Recommend products from your live catalogue, with prices and stock as they are right now. Explain differences between variants. Ask a clarifying question when the shopper's need is unclear.

  • Ground every answer in your pages and catalogue
  • Show products as cards with current price and a button
  • Say plainly when it does not know
  • Hand off to a person for orders, payments, refunds and complaints

Where do AI shopping assistants go wrong?

Inventing things is the big one: a discount code that does not exist, a delivery promise nobody made, an ingredient a product does not contain. The fix is strict grounding and a refusal path, so the assistant says it will check with the team instead of guessing.

The second failure is tone. An assistant that writes long, eager paragraphs reads like an advert. Short answers with a product card and one follow up question read like help.

The third is scope creep. An assistant asked about a refund should not try to process it. Money and complaints need a person and an audit trail.

How do you know it is helping sales?

Track conversations that included a product card and whether those visitors bought, but be careful: shoppers who chat were often already keen. The fair comparison is between similar visitors who had the assistant available and those who did not, which needs a control group like any other change.

What does IntellQ's chat agent do?

It answers from your published content and an imported catalogue from Shopify, WooCommerce or a CSV of up to 2,000 products, shows up to three product cards in a reply, and hands orders, payments, refunds and complaints to a person. It runs on your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini key, or on Apavin Intelligence, and can call your own tools over MCP. It sits in the same script tag as IntellQ's conversion agents.

How do you prepare a catalogue for an assistant?

An assistant is only as good as the descriptions it reads. Product pages with two line descriptions produce vague answers. Add the facts shoppers ask about: ingredients or materials, sizing, suitability, care, what is in the box, and what the product is not for. Use the words your customers use, not only the words on the label.

Keep policies on their own pages in plain language: delivery times by region, COD rules, returns and exchanges. When a shopper asks, the assistant can then quote the policy rather than paraphrase it from memory.

Finally, test it the way a sceptical shopper would. Ask for a discount, ask about a product you do not sell, ask in Hinglish, ask something rude. Each of those should end in an honest answer or a handoff, never in an invention.

Review a sample of conversations every week for the first month. Look for answers that were technically correct but unhelpful, such as listing every variant when the shopper asked which one to choose, and fix the product content so the next answer is better.

Questions

Is an AI shopping assistant the same as a chatbot?

It is a kind of chatbot, focused on product questions and recommendations and grounded in a store's catalogue, rather than scripted menus or general conversation.

Can an AI shopping assistant make up discounts?

A poorly grounded one can. Choose an assistant that only answers from your published content and catalogue and refuses or hands off when it does not know.

Does it need my customers' personal data?

Not for product questions. Order lookups need order data, which is better handled by your team or a tightly scoped integration.
