How to increase your Shopify store's conversion rate
3 min read · updated
Work from the bottom of the funnel up. Make the cart and checkout show the full price and delivery date before the shopper commits, put returns and payment options next to the add to cart button, make product pages answer the three questions people ask in chat, and keep the theme fast on a mid range phone. Change one thing at a time and keep a share of visitors on the old version so you can see what each change was worth.
Why start at the cart rather than the homepage?
A shopper in the cart has already chosen you. Losing them there costs more than losing a casual homepage visitor, and the reasons are well documented. Baymard Institute's average across 50 studies puts documented cart abandonment at about 70 percent (page updated September 2025), and the most common reason it lists among shoppers not just browsing is extra costs that appear too late, at 40 percent.
So show shipping, taxes and any COD fee before the final step, show an expected delivery date on the product page and in the cart, and make sure the payment methods your customers actually use are visible early. None of this needs a redesign.
What should a product page answer?
Read your last month of pre purchase chats and support emails. The same three or four questions come up for almost every catalogue: will it suit me, when will it arrive, what if it does not work, and is this the real thing. A product page that answers those in the first screen on mobile converts better than one that leads with brand story.
Put the answers where the eye already is. A line under the price about delivery and returns does more than a full returns page three clicks away.
- Delivery date or range for the shopper's pin code, near the price
- Return or exchange terms in one sentence under the button
- Size, shade or fit guidance where the variant picker is
- Real reviews with photos, not only star averages
How much does theme speed matter?
A lot on mobile, where most Indian D2C traffic arrives. Every app you install can add scripts to every page. Audit them twice a year: open the storefront on a mid range Android phone over mobile data, remove apps nobody has looked at in months, and prefer apps that load through theme app extensions, which Shopify can manage and switch off cleanly.
Measure with real devices rather than a desktop score. A page that scores well on a fibre connection can still take several seconds to show the add to cart button on a crowded 4G network.
How do you test changes on Shopify without a developer?
For copy, visibility and links on elements that already exist, a script that edits marked elements in the browser is enough. Theme sections for things like a delivery note or a trust line can be added from the theme editor and then changed by the tool. Layout changes, new sections and checkout changes still belong in the theme or in Shopify's own checkout settings.
Whatever you use, hold back a control group. Shopify stores swing with campaigns and festive sales, and a before and after chart will credit your change with whatever the calendar did.
Which changes usually move a Shopify store first?
In practice the early wins are almost always about certainty: certainty about the total, the delivery date, the return and the authenticity of the product. Clever design comes later. After that, look at returning visitors who view the same product several times without buying, because that pattern usually means a specific doubt that a single well placed line can answer.
IntellQ is built for that second stage. It reads those patterns from behaviour, proposes a bounded change such as a reassurance line after the add to cart button, waits for your approval, and keeps it only if it beats the 20 percent of visitors held back as control.
What does a first month look like?
Week one, fix certainty: totals, delivery dates and returns visible before the cart. Week two, rewrite the top five product pages around the questions in your chat logs. Week three, audit apps and speed on a real phone. Week four, start one measured change with a control group and leave it running.
Questions
What is a normal Shopify conversion rate?
It varies too much by category, price and traffic source for one number to be useful. Track your own rate by device and source, and judge changes against a control group rather than a published average.
Do more apps lower conversion?
They can. Each app may add scripts to every page, which slows mobile pages. Keep the apps you use, remove the rest, and prefer ones built on theme app extensions.
Should I offer cash on delivery?
For most Indian D2C stores, yes, because many shoppers still prefer it, especially outside metros. Manage the cost with a small, clearly shown COD fee or a prepaid incentive rather than hiding it at the end.
Can I A/B test Shopify checkout?
Only within what Shopify's checkout settings and checkout extensibility allow. Most testing happens on product pages and the cart, where theme code and scripts run.
